Value
In relationships, in religion, in business…hell, in LIFE…value doesn’t dissipate. It shifts from one place to another. If I have $100 and buy a bag of corn chips, the value of the $100 has not decreased. A portion of it was simply shifted, or moved, from currency to food. My $100 still exists…it’s just now fragmented, exploited, and exchanged. And to whatever extent the corn chips do not satisfy me, then that’s really just my problem since I chose to convert a fragment of my currency to corn ships and then all of my corn chips to literal shit. Trying to convert shit back to currency is dicey. And that’s my point.
So, if someone chooses to work for free- even with the purest and most righteous of intentions- they are, in reality, shifting value away from themselves to something or someone else. We do and we give because giving and doing is a natural expression of who we are.
But as we give, we often fail to properly consider the consequences of giving too much or in the wrong way. The first consequence is immediate: the value we earned is no longer ours and getting it back now involves the permission of others. And that can sometimes be a very dicey prospect.
Think about that.
